Mexican Baked Seasonal Favorites
What would November in San Antonio be without celebrating Dia de los Muertos and having Pan de Muerto? Or the colorful Rosca de Reyes for Día de Reyes? At Panifico Bake Shop, our seasonal favorites are still baked with the same tradition of generations past in an effort to continue the tradition with new generations.
Pan de Muerto
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a ritual that has been celebrated for over 3,000 years, rich in culture and history. Begun by the Mayans and Aztecs and influenced by the Spanish conquistadores as well as the Catholic faith, it is not a period of mourning or sadness. Rather, it is a celebration to remember and honor family and friends.
Día de los Muertos is celebrated November 1st and 2nd. Customarily, most go to cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of loved ones, waiting that evening for the return of their loved one’s spirits. Many bring their loved one’s favorite food and drink in preparation for their return.
Rosca de Reyes
Dia de Reyes, or Three Kings Day, is celebrated on January 6th. Also known as the Epiphany, it is a Christian celebration that celebrates the three kings who bring gifts to the Christ child. A tradition in Mexico, January 6th also marked the day that children “receive” gifts from the three kings, just as kids in the United States wait for Santa on December 25th.
The Rosca de Reyes is part of this tradition, with a plastic baby hidden inside representing the Christ child. Whoever takes slice of the Rosca with the baby inside becomes a “godparent” of the child and must host a party on February 2nd to give thanks for all the good fortune and prosperity awaiting in the new year.
This moist and delicious bread has a light citrus taste and is adorned with candied fruit, sugar paste and sanding sugar. And of course, the celebration would not be complete without the plastic baby as a surprise for those at your party!
